The seed for this series was planted when viewing an exhibition. The black and white photographic collages of Wallace Berman utilize repetition of image. Months later, while leafing through an old LIFE magazine I spotted the image that he’d replicated in a specific piece. I saved that page, with the image of a hand, as a memento but decided to use my own hand as a model and utilize the pattern of repetition to hold my accumulation of small works on playing cards.
Incorporated in these pieces are vintage images, drawings, postage, rubber stamps, paint, ink and thread… As a mixed media artist, my iconography echoes running collaborative stories, and invites the beginnings of new stories through influences such as fluxus, mail art, visual poetry, online communities and other experimental activities. Several of my favorite artists are Joseph Cornell, Ray Johnson and the teacher who introduced me to the art of both, Franklyn Liegel.
The mystery of fortune telling and the excitement associated with assisting a magician are a part in putting the play into this series.
I hope you enjoy these pieces as much as I do while creating each one.
